Welcome to make page where go into geek/popular culture cookbooks and cook things from them. Enjoy!

Cookbook: A Feast of Ice and Fire (A Game of Thrones)

Recipe for: Modern Applecakes (pages 18-19)

I figured I would start with something easy since baking is not my forte and there are much more complicated items in the cookbook. Since these are basically apple cinnamon muffins, I figured I couldn't mess them too bad. The ingredients were super simple and I only had to go to the store for apples and some unsalted butter. I had some trouble peeling the apples since I am uncoordinated, so I stuck with putting together the batter. Despite some mishaps like me forgetting the salt (super low sodium!haha) and the crumble becoming a solid until we added more cinnamon and brown sugar, everything went pretty easily.

Looking back, I'll definitely remember to make a large amount of crumble to cover the entire top of the muffin so it can cover the entirety of the top. Otherwise, it looks kinda similar to what it should despite me not using jumbo sized muffin pans so we ended up with 24 instead of a lesser amount but they still tasted pretty good.

This is the final result of half of the batch of applecakes. The cinnamon ties everything together with the taste and the apples weren't too overwhelming in them. In geek fashion here are some details on where in Westeros the muffins would be found: they are typically a breakfast made at the Wall. Jon Snow is mentioned eating these with blood sausage during breakfast.

I'll be trying some more recipes weekly or biweekly (until my weekends get busy) and I will alternate between some other geeky cookbooks. So stay tuned!
