House Baratheon and the Stormlands

*this is a continuation of my Month of Thrones series. Note that there are no spoilers past season three for my non-book readers*
House Baratheon
Source

Current Leader: Joffrey Baratheon, Stannis Baratheon (disputed)
Their Title: King of the Iron Throne, Lord Paramount of the Stormlands
House Seat: Storm's End
Current Family Members: Tommen Baratheon (brother), Myrcella Baratheon (sister), Stannis Baratheon (uncle), Shireen Baratheon (cousin), Bastard half-siblings (Gendry, Mya Stone and Edric Storm)
Family Traits: Black hair and blue eyes
House Words: Ours is the Fury
Region: The Stormlands
Bastard Surname: Storm
Geography: In the southeastern part of the region bordered by the Reach, Dorne and the Crownlands. Has a wide variety of mountains, shores and forest. Gets it's name from the heavy storms that frequent the area.
History/Notable Events:
-the Storm Kings once had a territory that streched all the way to Moat Cailin in the North, but lost it to the Hoares of the Iron Islands.
-the final Storm King was slain in battle during the Conquest after he refused to bow down to Aegon.
-the succesor, Orys Baratheon married the kings daughter Argella and kept their sigil and house words for the creation of House Baratheon.
-the tragedy of Summerhall (a region in the south) where a fire caused the deaths of King Aegon V, his heir and his Hand (thought to be due to trying to hatch dragon eggs).
-the siege of Storm's End where Stannis committed regicide/kin slaying to gain his brother's troops leading into the Battle of the Blackwater.

Notable People from Region:
Argiliac "the Arrogant" Durrendon- the last Storm King. Slain by Orys Baratheon
Orys Baratheon- proported bastard half-brother of Aegon. Slayed the Storm King and inherited the lands.

My Thoughts: The Storm Lords are a very interesting group of people. You have Stannis who murdered his own brother that he was jealous of (for gaining Lordship of Storm's End while he was relegated to Dragonstone) and also resented his brother Robert for denying his birthright and for dragging the kingdom into bankruptcy (thus giving the Lannisters more power). There's Renly, who had the popularity and personality but may not have been fit to hold a position such as the king, but I would have liked to see him to see him team up with Robb. Finally Robert was more of a warrior who didn't know what to expect when he took the throne (by way of conquest and his ties to the Targaryens).  This led to his turn towards alcohol, abuse of his wife and his penchant for bedding women. The children of Cersei as legal Baratheons (though pure Lannister) can also be considered in this family. While Tommen and Myrcella are sweet and abiding, Joffrey is a monster with a large propensity towards violence due to his spoiled upbringing and lack of his "father's" attention.

What's Next: We will hopefully see Stannis pull himself together and rally to put on a show of force. When we last left off his advisers Melisandre and Davos agreed that he should set his eyes on the North and helping protect the Night's Watch from the threat of the Others. Next we will see Joffrey's affect on the kingdom and what kind of ruler he will be as he grows up. Hopefully his impending marriage will show/encourage a different side in him from the interventions of Margaery other than the sadism he has been displaying as of late. The only people who can control Joffrey are Tyrion (his uncle, who always manages to slap or demean) and Tywin (his grandfather, the true ruler of the realm). I would also like to see more of Tommen, since he is the only remaining Baratheon in the area with Myrcella in Dorne and Shireen in Dragonstone. This season should show the difficulties in the balance of power going on with the Baratheons/Lannisters and the Tyrells as they make their moves closer to the throne. Some interesting conflicts are sure to emerge as well with Stannis and with Joffrey so there is plenty to look forward to this season.
