Bastard Surname: Flowers
Geography: Southwestern part of Westeros that borders many other regions. Considered the most fertile and heavily populated area.
History/Notable Events:
-prior to Aegon's Landing, the Reach was its own kingdom with the rulers from House Gardener (now extinct)
-House Tyrell were then named Lord Paramount over the region
-have had a longstanding rivalry with Dorne over certain territories.
-they were pro-Targaryen during Robert's Rebellion and won at the Battle of Ashford for the loyalists
-similarly, they allied with Renly Baratheon during the War of Five Kings until his death when they joined up with Lannisters
Notable People from Region:
King Mern Gardener- the final King of the Reach. Was killed in the Field of Fire during the War of Conquest.
Harlen Tyrell- a former steward to House Gardener, was named Lord Paramount after he surrendered.
My Thoughts: This House is George's version of a more realistic Slytherin (or at least one with a medieval twist). This is probably the most ambitious House and they are obsessed with their rise to power, as seen through their words "Growing Strong". Like the Tully's, the Tyrells never held a prominent position until after being granted one after they joined the Seven Kingdoms during Aegon. Since the show isn't going to use the 2 older brothers, it firmly establishes that the most competent people in the family are the Queen of Thorns and her granddaughter Margaery, which is refreshing to see them so involved in the politics and manipulations needed to play the Game of Thrones.
What's Next: The wedding of the century with Joffrey should showcase even more of this very driven family. We will get to meet Lord Mace Tyrell and see if he really is an idiot (or that's just what his mother is saying). This is a very strong willed family so we will see how they react to the potentiality of the harm to Margaery via the sadist Joffrey, her king and soon to be husband. I don't know about you, but I think that she has something up her sleeve to continue to control and manipulate him as she currently has been doing since she met the King and heard from Sansa. Loras' predicament will be interesting to see as well, as he is currently betrothed to Cersei Lannister, but knowing Cersei, she will make sure that this never comes to fruition.
